Abhinaya

The Language of the Eyes: Navarasas Explained

In Bharatanatyam, the eyes do not merely look — they speak, weep, rage, and rejoice. Discover the nine emotional states that form the grammar of expression.

In Bharatanatyam, abhinaya begins in the eyes. The Navarasas — the nine emotional states — are shringara (love), hasya (mirth), karuna (compassion), raudra (anger), veera (courage), bhayanaka (fear), bibhatsa (disgust), adbhuta (wonder) and shanta (peace).

A dancer does not perform these feelings; she remembers them. The eyebrow lifts a fraction, the gaze softens, the breath slows — and the audience recognises something true. Technique holds the body still enough for the emotion to be seen.

This is why teachers train the eyes as rigorously as the feet. Rasa is not decoration. It is the reason the dance exists.
