Every element of the Nataraja icon carries encoded meaning — fire, snake, dwarf, and drum. This is what the sculpture is telling you.
Nataraja is Shiva as the lord of dance, and every detail of the bronze is deliberate. The damaru in the upper right hand sounds creation; the flame in the upper left is dissolution.
The lower right hand offers abhaya, the gesture of fearlessness. The lower left points to the raised foot — release. Beneath the other foot lies Apasmara, the dwarf of ignorance, subdued rather than destroyed.
The ring of fire is the cycle of the universe, and Shiva dances calmly at its centre. For a dancer, the icon is an instruction: move with the whole world, but keep the face serene.
